Importance of the Agadir Crisis

The Agadir crisis seemed like it wouldn’t be a huge issue after it had been resolved, but in actuality, it turned out to be a huge factor prior to World War I. After the crisis, Britain had allied with France and the two became closer and closer. It led to a deepened sense of divisions throughout Europe as large nations began to align with each other. This greatly heightened tensions between the major powers of Europe, and led to a heightened sense of fear that War was definitely coming among many European countries.

  1. Additionally, with the expansion of the alliance system, it appeared more likely that World War could break out over matters of little relative importance. War was avoided only because Germany backed down. If Germany felt that it could not back down, as it felt in 1914, world war would have already begun. Great insight Meghan!
